Hello David,
In addition to SWR bandwidth, you will also encounter another issue that U
will need to resolve, and that's angle of radiation. If you are
interested in talking to guys relatively locally (zero to a few hundred miles), a
horizontally strung antenna (a dipole or inverted V) will work much better,
as the vertical you have has a relatively low angle of radiation, and DX
stations will be favored over the locals (unless the station U are working is
VERY close by). Another consideration for this vertical antenna is
grounding. Verticals work MUCH better if a suitable ground is used; at least a
few radials a quarter wavelength in length (about 60-65 feet) should be
strung out from the base of your vertical, if decent performance is wanted.
Good luck and 73,
Herman, N4CH.
