I believe you to be absolutely right Bob. (WA5CAB)
I now remember that there were only certain manufacturers or brands,
that could successfully be modified. Memories are coming back of
hunting for them as some of mine were not the right brands.
I believe........ in my humble opinion...... that the certain brands
that COULD be modified and used in GG, were the ones where the beam
forming plates, if there were any, were connected to the suppressor grid
and not the cathode.
This way, all elements between the cathode and the plate could be grounded.
OR... something like that.
Now that would explain the different data on the tubes that was
available. Essentially electrically they were the same.... until some
curious ham found that they could be modified. We hams are a funny
bunch. Just won't leave things alone. Keep doing the impossible even
in the face of someone saying, "you can't do that".
Okey dokey?
Speaking of "way back when".....I hesitate to mention that I also bought
a 24/12 Vdc dynamotor and re-wired it(per article in CQ...or QST) to
work on 12/6 Vdc.... I was probably 16 or 17 years old. It was in my 55
Red and White Ford (6Vdc system) that I put it. Worked too. Had to lift
each wire on the commutator and move it one brush over. It was a
tedious job, especially for a kid.
I remember it whining, winding up and winding down.... it could be
heard in my signal too..... Wow... I used a Gonset mobile converter on
my AM radio and a home brew AM transmitter.
Back then, mobile antennas were not as sophisticated as they are now.
And I was only a kid and what did I know? But it worked.
Center loaded whip.... whoop...whoop.... whoop... shades of Brother Dave
Gardner and the sheriff that had a tall whip on his car... remember
that? And "Miss Daisy"? She was alright until we turned her head
around.... hee hee.
When I moved to Tulsa (1958) and the Arkansas River flooded, late 50's
or early 60's, we hams helped to provide communications. We were
stationed at crucial points on the riverbanks. Sandbagging was being
done and we were there all night plus having to still work our jobs too.
:-) :-) :-)
