Looking OK is nice but does it work anywhere near spec. I've seen lots a
"nice looking" HRO-500's over the years, but because of age and design,
require lots of work. My HRO-500 works well but sits mainly as window
dressing next to my NCX-5/VX-501/NCX-A combo. The NCX-5 actually receives
better, especially on the higher frequencies, then the HRO-500. $200
isn't a bad deal but caution that a lot can be evolved bringing it up to
speed if it's been languishing for years unused with caps dried
out/leaky/etc. and resistors out of spec etc. Several articles in
Electric Radio captured a number of issues and resolutions to a number of
HRO-500 problems. National also issued a number of service bulletins,
depending on HRO-500 Series Number, for this receiver.
