[Boatanchors] DO YOU REMEMBER?

In an earlier life before I became a teacher full-time with a big cut in
pay, I worked for a major AEC contractor. We would routinely check other
engineers' and scientists' book cases without asking if we needed a book not
in the company library and would borrow it, leaving a note.

I found 3 books from the Stanford Library that had NOT been checked out nor
surplus from the library in an engineer's bookcase. The company librarian
and I decided that they should be sent back to the Stanford Library and she
took care of that. I never did find out if she left a note.

It's amazing how many people feel it's OK to steal books if they think they
can get away with it. I wonder how, if he'd been caught at the time, his
AEC Q Clearance...the AEC equivalent of Top Secret... would have been
affected if it was on some record (days before computer records that know
everything) that he apparently thought stealing books from the library was
OK...??? There must be a lot of people who think nothing of it if the
elaborate methods that public libraries have to go through to keep books
from disappearing these days.
