I had the same issue of a crappy finish.  So I disassembled mine and  
sandblasted the casting.  That gave it a satin finish that would take  paint.  
Several coats of sandable primer, wet sanding between coats, filled  in the 
corrosion pits.  A final two coats with semi gloss black gave me a  beautiful 
microphone that matches my Drake 7 line.
 
You might give it a try, you've got nothing to loose.
