Interesting indeed. Radio seemed familiar somehow - took a
few minutes - then it finally hit me... shares several
things in common with what eventually became the R-1051
series... There were many "wild" radios between the 390
and the 1051- many just modified civilian sets (like the
Hammerlund SP-600 -> R-274B - & SP-600 -> R-450) and several
"wanna bees" like the GE XSDR-1 which was to become the
FRR-48 for the Navy - but never made it past prototype.

Back to this Sylvania... there were several "requests" from
the military during the 60s for radios of various types -
often somewhat exotic (such as synchronous detectors,
synthesized local osc., etc.) so several designs came and
went. The era of the "chain drives" such as this receiver,
1051s, etc. were one result - monsters like the WRR-2
another. Sylvania didn't give up when this unit didn't make
the cut - they had another radio - the R-1414 that saw some
service.

ICs paved the way for the processor controlled recievers
like the Racals, WJs, Harris - and so on.
