[Boatanchors] RAL rebuild?

Another new year's project list is looming...

Yet again I am looking at a pair of partial RAL's that I would like to
combine
into one decently functional unit. This will basically require moving the
front
panel plus the audio filter components from one unit to the other, which
seems
like more or less dismantling both receivers and building up from scratch
(apart from the RF compartments and bandswitching).

Does this seem like a reasonable thing to be able to do? I have basic tools
but nothing fancy, and am not, er, gifted in mechanical skills.
