[Boatanchors] Lafayette HE-10

Back in 81' I bought a Kenwood R-2000 for my dad. He used it the same way
your brother wants to and it worked out perfectly.
I put up a single wire out the window to the corner of the garage and it
worked really well for him.
Today, I still use it on the bench assisting with alignments etc and as a
BCB and casual amateur receiver whit the station antenna connected.
It has never had a problem but I can tell that it could probably use an
alignment after all these years.
It is small, self contained with a built in speaker, timer etc and covers dc
to 30mhz.
You can get a converter that installs in the rear for VHF.
Highly recommended.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Lafayette HE-10

Good Evening everyone
I am on a search for a small-ish receiver that would be a solid performer on

am bcb and some casual swl'ing

It would be for my 81 yo brother, yep, that would be my older brother.

He complains about a lack of sensitivity on am bcb on typical "table radios"

which limits his ability to pick up some distant station so he can listen to

his favorite talk shows when his local station cancels them for some other
programming.

The old Lafayette came to mind although I've never owned one I always
thought they looked like they might be a solid performer in a small package.

I like the fact it is transformer operated.

I have plenty of larger radios I could offer him but I know if it isn't
pretty compact it probably won't work for his household.

Any experience with one of these? Any alternative suggestions?

PS I don't know why he wants to listen to talk radio. The opinions usually
just get him all upset. I figure with general coverage he might like the ham

bands. Never too late you know. He is partly responsible for getting me
hooked 5 decades ago!
