Nuu-uuh!  I had to buy my own stuff or trade for it.
I started working for "real money" (as in I got a 
paycheck) when I was 13 (yes; I lied about my age and
they never checked it).  My first full station was 
a Hallicrafters S-120 receiver which I traded for
(you could hear the whole Novice band at once, 
and all of 40-meters was about a
quarter of an inch on the dial)  and my BC-459.
I scrounged old dumped TVs from the woods to build
the power supply, which smoked-up in about a week.
