[Boatanchors] Novice Transmitter Thoughts?

Reading through the comments on this thread and WOW, Heathkit, Eico,  
Knight, Globe, you were all rich guys (or had rich parents).  :^)

My first novice rig back in 51 was a HB 6V6 xtal oscillator feeding  
directly into an end-fed wire antenna.  Receiver was a two-tube regen,  
6C6 and 76 as I remember.  Subsequently upgraded to a HB 6J7  
oscillator driving a 6L6 rig, the  6K8 & 6SN7 "superhet" featured in  
ARRL handbooks of the period and a Windom antenna (the real one) and  
started to make a few contacts.  All made from salvaged parts and  
gifts from a local Elmer.  Lived up in MT so no surplus outlets  
anywhere nearby but did buy some stuff through adds in the back or  
Radio and TV News.

Them were the days I guess.
