It is the capacity of the coaxial cable that is killing you! I would build a small external oscillator/buffer (i.e. a transistor, or two) to use the external crystals.

But (there is always a but), using coax, even the thin stuff kills the crystal signal to the Drake's oscillator. In other words, if crystal X is plugged into a crystal socket in the Drake, no problem. But using the crystal outside the receiver, even with less than a foot of coax seems to kill its output.
Anyone know a solution? special coax? Some kind of coil to tune out the reactance in the coax?
