Greg, Bry,
boatanchor/glowbug solution
I had more Heathkit HRA-10-1 plug-in crystal calibrators (which utilize a 6BA6 RF Amp and "tall" hc-13u 100 KHz xtal) than I had radios - So, I found a small Hammond chassis box and installed an octal socket, wired pin 2 for B+ (of 150 VDC @ about 2 mA), pin 3 for Filament (6.3 VAC @ 300 mA), and pin 1 for calibrator signal output.
(I have permanent HV B+ and Filament supplies on the bench for powering glowbug projects etc.)
Instead of injecting signal directly into a specific receiver I radiate a 100 KHz signal throughout the shack (utilizing a 30 inch length of hookup wire) and it is now available for all equipment, everywhere, all the time!

Greg - there are a number of circuits out there. Some of them use a standard tall hc13u crystal on 100 kHz while others use a higher frequency crystal and divide it down to 100 kHz. To me, I prefer the old way with a standard crystal, although others will probably do OK.
The simplest method would be to use a transistor in a Pierce oscillator. There are numerous articles in the later ARRL publications and 73 Magazine.
Another good example is to look at the manual for a radio like the Yaesu FT101 series or the Kenwood TS520, since these used a solid state 100 kHz calibrator with the traditional 100 kHz crystals.
The manuals for both are freely available for download on the web. You can easily replicate those circuits with readily available parts and the designs should be most reliable.
Any inductors you use will need to be large enough to make it run at low
frequency. If anyone needs a 100 kHz crystal, please e-mail me off the list.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Solid state crystal calibrator
circuit needed
Hi:
I'm looking to build up a 100khz crystal calibrator for my SBE SB 34. I'd like to use an MPF 102 fet and an HC/6 tall boy crystal at 12 vdc. Got all the parts but no road map. Thanks - Greg - WA7LYO - Kinston NC
