[Boatanchors] PARTING OUT

Back in the early 1970's there was a congressional investigation into the high cost of automobile replacement parts and as I recall the roughly $3,000 Pinto contained around $40,000 worth of parts at replacement cost. We don't have quite as much of a price spread with most boat anchor gear yet.
I have brought a bunch of vintage radios back from the dead and many of these would not have been possible without some parts donor units. But as a collector/operator I do hate seeing clean working gear parted out but the financial incentive for the owner is clear.
Many of the 70's/80's Japanese receivers and transceivers sell for less as complete units than the separate cost of their optional filters. I recently bought a Kenwood R-5000 on ebay with all optional filter slots filled for $150 less than just the filters sell for separately. I paid more for a needed Icom CW filter than I paid for the IC-751 itself but in this case I did get a good deal on the transceiver. The same thing applies to Drake filters and noise blankers.

I have had similar experiences with a couple of SB 400 transmitters. They were in B A D shape. After making inquiries and getting to takers, I opted to part them out.
The selling price of the parts ... sum of the parts if you will ... was more than what many complete (whole, working units) units brought in some cases.
That is easy to have happen when you can sell a case for 30 or 40 dollars to someone who wants one ... a single board ...
a single crystal ... a set of knobs ... a set of tubes ... controls ... all separately for a fair price.
Have you priced an SB 400 escutcheon or dial mechanism lately? HI HI
