John,

I have no idea regarding the 220 AM activity.

I would suggest caution with one of these.

The reason is that its intended use is the Military aircraft Band.
Depending on how clean the signal is, it "may" be suitable for Amateur
220 AM service. However, i'd ensure that there are NO spurious signals
beyond that portion.

Otherwise, Uncle Sam would be hunting for a signal in its realm.

There is more activity in that Military Air Band than people know of.
Except in rare instances, it is NOT encrypted.

Most aircraft transmitters require low power outputs due to the altitude
advantage.

The Civil aircraft only put out 10 to 20 watts, and reach at least 100
miles while being at altitudes bellow 10,000ft.

The Military aircraft usually operate above 40,000ft unless they are
making low altitude runs, or are ascending or descending.

Just my $0.02 worth! I've got a receiver covering this frequency
range. I hear a lot of traffic, with a discone antenna only about 16ft
above ground. I can easily hear them over 100 miles away.

My discone is one of those that most likely was used on a forward
observer vehicle.
