Yep, that they are. Makes them ideal for hacking into.

The plan for me is a 4 channel crystal controlled rig for EmComm here on
Oahu. There are four net frequencies used, two on 40 and one each on 60 and
80. The two on 40 are close enough that I should be able to get away with
using a common (albeit compromise) presets for both. I see it as an
experiment for someone who doesn't have a life (which pretty much describes
me) and has a few ideas to try out.
You don't want to know what I have in mind for the 2nd HW-18. :-D

You mean like the one sitting waiting to go to storage until I can get the
room straightened out? Okay, it's not so nice and it needs TLC (possibly up
to a partial re-kitting) but it will fly again. So will the Drake TR-4.
Eventually. So will the SX-24, Gonset G-43 and a number of other boxes
sitting idle waiting for my magic touch. Or a barge-sized foot.
It all depends on what one wants and what effort one is willing to put into
it. I have a 52211 Tx that I have to unconvert and restore. I have another
ATA Tx that is a late production (replacement) unit since it has details
that didn't come into existence until the AN/ARC-5s were being made. It
also needs to be unconverted. Some might say they're a waste of time since
they have been converted and won't be original anymore. I believe they are
worth the effort as long as I can make credible examples of these once I'm
done, both in appearance and in function.
Taking this back to the HW-18 conversion, it satisfies a need and is worth
the effort to accomplish it. To me. Probably to no one else.
