[Boatanchors] AC Line Protection for Boatanchors

Hi Todd,
I've been wondering where you were located. Did we pass at the recent Cary Swapfest?...How about you Walt??

Yeah, Todd, you guys up in that area have had some bad storms. Mother nature's spark gap puts on a real show at times. After I posted this I began to recall the number of zaps we have had here over the last 35 or so years...probably five or six..plus a tree or two, with some resulting in some zapped appliances and a few radio problems. This most recent event must have hit the power line big-time, cause my neighbors fencer got zapped and she said they also had a loud pop in the house. I have a feeling these storms are gonna trend toward the severe side in the future. I don't remember storms being this rough and the heavy rains we have now...but, as a kid, I probably didn't pay that much attention to the weather...except for Hurricane Hazel...I do remember her.

I want to thank you guys for all the input and suggestions. I will probably start by getting the Progress Energy meter s/p installed...think its less than 50 bux for installation and around six bux per month. I have a separate brkr box in Studio B which will be easy to operate. Speaking of the brkr box, in one of the past zaps we got, I ran to the box to throw the main brkr (cause something was smoking in the shack) and the handle broke off...the contacts had welded together.

I'll be reading over all the suggestions and will try to work out something else also. I'm glad I don't have but two 20+ yr old rice boxes. Their multi-legged fuses just can't take it like a boatanchor..hi.

I saw the Apex/Cary areas getting clobbered this past week. A lot of
cloud to ground lightning. I'm just north in the Franklinton/Wilton
area here. We had the worst T-storm I've ever witnessed (and I've seen
a few) come through here maybe a month ago. Took out the
cable/internet/phone splitter, one phone, and tripped the GFI breaker
in my garage radio area. Next thing on my list if it ever gets below
'sweltering' on the thermometer again is to add additional protection.
Y'all get a lot of lightning here.

Not as much as Warren, though. My wife is from Tampa and I almost
ended up there. It is indeed the lightning capital of North America.
And boy, do those afternoon storms roll in off the Gulf like
clockwork. If memory serves me, right around 4:30 pretty much every
day.
