The opaque white stuff you are referring to can usually be found
wherever computers are being unpacked. They throw it away in large
quantities.
It sustains impacts with some "give", yet it retains or regains its
shape rapidly. It is a closed cell foam.
My solution is keeping several caulking tubes of liquid nails around. I
will either use the "builders foam" to line the double corrugated box,
stick the "builders foam" with the "liquid nails" to the interior of the
box. The I use the closed cell foam from the computer packing. The
radio, (or whatever I'm packing.), is then wrapped in small cell bubble
pack.
I always stuff the interior of a radio with the same small cell bubble
pack/wrap.
BTW, FedEx, (er..FedWrex), just announced a 5.9% rate increase.
Anything over the "magic" 70 pound level, I too use Greyhound!
