[Boatanchors] Boatanchors Digest, CB vrs Ham
bonddaleena at aol.com

Hi. Although I have antennas for 160, 80, and 40, I use 20M to 70CM.
I also don't understand the animosity toward the 11M folks. Heck, my
beloved 75A-4 even has an 11M band. ha ha
YES, I know all about that saga, having been a Ham for 46 years. (wow!
I'm old!!! ha ha)
I did not enter through the CB ranks but rather through the SWL route.
As far as the 'idiots' and 'language' issues.... remember when a
certain Canadian was on 14.275?
Now Glen has that frequency. I actually (almost) miss the transmissions
from the 'great white north', especially when he would get into verbal
confrontations with certain '8 Landers'. (I did NOT care for the
profanity!!)
I wonder where he went?
Actually, I have 27.185 MHz programmed in a LOT of my radios (receive
only, thank you). It's a great way to check the propagation on 10M and
entertaining to boot!!!!
Have FUN!!!
ron
N4UE
(a 13 WPM Extra) (just missed the 20 WPM)

I must be missing something.? How is the sale of panel meters related
to 11m
usage?? I saw an e-mail about repurposing an old CB linear amp for 10m
service,
but thought that was seperate from the panel meters one.?
?
I also don't understand the rabid hatred of CB'ers.? While 11m is chock
full of
idiots, there are a lot of legit users as well that obey the rules.? My
use of a

Alex makes a great point and although I did not come into amateur radio
via CB
several close ham friends did come through this route. There are
probably a lot
of list members who spent time on 11 meters after it was lost to ham
radio.
There is no need to insult "former CB hams" just as some of the "rice
box"
remarks are not so nice to our JA members. Through the kindness and
generosity
of one of them I recently acquired a very nice Trio TX-310 transmitter
to go
with my JR-310. There is some very cool vintage Japanese gear out there!

My recollection, perhaps mistaken, is that the same person with the
panel
meters also had 11 meter gear for sale that could easily be used on 10
meters.
My annoyance is the prevalence of Craigslist offerings in the SF Bay
Area of
amplifiers and transceivers that have either already been converted to
also
cover 10 meters or that are advertised emphasizing that they can be
converted to operate on 10 meters. And the advertisements are NOT aimed
at
hams but at CBers.
It's strictly illegal by the way to sell items of that sort to anybody
including hams. I haven't looked at eBay lately but several years ago it
was obvious that the people auctioning that type of gear were aiming at
CBers. I had a running exchange of e-mail with the then eBay lawyer
about
the fact that they were breaking the law and also a couple of exchanges
of
e-mail with the FCC about that. I think/hope that they have cleaned up
their act since then.
I was happy to see that one of the eBay merchants I reported to the FCC
was
subsequently cited and fined by the FCC for that continuing action.
As the sunspot cycle improves propagation we will likely again have the
competition of the illegal operation by CBers on the 10 meter ham band.
By the way, has anybody else who reads this list ever operated on 11
meters
AS A HAM LEGALLY?? I used to do cross band with Australia and New
Zealand
in the 1950s when I was on 10/11 meter AM with a DX-35. Full duplex 11
meter to 10 meter. A lot of fun operating that way but with the
prevalence
of SSB and VOX not that novel these days...

I recall that, in the early 60's there was a group of hams that ran 11
meter
gear in the Denver area. . . .
At that time I had had my general ticket for over 10 years but also
used CB
to talk to other hams. We all ran legal CB gear. . . .
I even remember my call ~ 15W?462! At that time it was sometime had to
find
some one to talk to on CB.

This recollection is indeed erroneous.
Bry Carling, AF4K was offering "components", I.e., air variable
capacitors to a number of lists. One of the lists happened to be an 11
mtr mail list.
This started the entire uproar. Seems like everybody wants to have a
shot at someone that is selling parts. Any radion or Amp that bry
sells, is on his web page. I've NEVER seen Bry sell 11 meter gear, or
sell the junk that purports to be usable on 10 meters.

I have seen Bry on a few of my group lists and have never seen him
sell any Illegal amps. Quite honestly before this turns into a
Freeband, CB vs Ham flame discussion Ide suggest something gets done
about the 75/80 meter language problem. Some of them are much worse
that anything a CBer has ever said. 73, Bill kf6wxj
