I usually use a pair of slip-joint pliers, laid parallel to the panel
with a thin sheet of cardboard or something with a hole cut the size of
the nut to protect the panel but there is still some risk of damaging
the panel. GC and maybe others made specialized tools for this
purpose, but I like the flexi-clamps used for camera repair better, even
though I have yet to buy a pair:

The other option is to try to loosen the hex nut on the inside of the
panel. This requires a very thin wrench, which I'm told were once sold
under the name, believe it or not, of "panel wrenches". I can't find
any for sale, but if you think of the kind of flat wrench that is
stamped from a piece of steel that is sometimes included with power
tools, it might be possible to make one from a piece of thin steel stock.
