If the panel is small enough (8.5x11 or less), you might look into printing
the entire set of labels and markings as a plastic overlay on a laser
printer. Printing it "backwards" (reversed L-to-R) would let you put the
printing behind the plastic, where it would be less subject to wear. If
the panel is larger, you may be able to do the same thing with sheets
up to 11x17" at Kinko's or other custom print place. This would let you
experiment with various fonts, type sizes, etc., beforehand, and lets you
go for color markings if you want. Spray adhesive and a roller will get it
pressed down evenly without bubbles.
I'm also partial to the Brother P-Touch labels; I've seen them in black
on white, black on yellow, black on clear, in tape widths up to 3/4" with
multiple fonts and orientations. I think they also come in white on black,
white on red, red on white, and other colors.
I am sure others will have additional suggestions.
