I've found it a successful strategy to go in at the last few seconds 
with my absolute maximum bid.  Sometimes I win sometimes I lose but I 
have avoided the gradual runup in price.  Since the bidding seems to 
start in the last few hours, I know well ahead if the price has gotten 
out of hand and just let it go.

What has happened is that the real auction is compressed into the last 
few seconds.

I have a great quote from an old boss of mine when we were complaining 
about some executive decision.  I thought it was funny and well said and 
have used it many times but I don't want to insult the original poster.
