My wife used to work for a fairly large auction firm.  They even used the
nasty practice of having "plant" bidders to run items up.

Remember, the higher it sells for the more commission the auctioneer makes,
either live or on-line.  It's just business.  Attend a land or cattle
auction sometime, talk about "sniping", when auctioneer pulls a call in bid
out of his pocket.

If I want or need something on the on-line system, I bid accordingly to what
it is worth to me.  Usually only bidding on items that I can not pick up
"live" or in person.  Keeps blood pressure down and I don't have a lot of
extra stuff I really didn't need.
