Doug,

I suppose the big picture is profit.

As for country of origin, I suppose it may depend 
on the market.

I just checked my stock of household lamps and
most of what I have at home are not made in China.

Philips - Indonesia

Osram - Indonesia

Tungsram - China

Sylvania - Tunisia and Jungary

GE - Hungary

Goes to show there really is a world-wide
economy.
