There's nothing bad in any of it, it's all in how or why you use it.
I've found that simply reading one's Facebook comments tells volumes
about the person.

Precisely. You get to choose how to spend your time communicating: via
the WWW or via the airwaves. I've been a member of Facebook since
2007. It's a very handy tool for finding old friends (social
networking). Beyond that, it offers me nothing that I didn't already
have (including ways to burn time). I have a throw-away email account
associated with it and have never had any issues of privacy through
using it. It works as designed, and as you say - it's whatcha make it.
