Have an idea for unusual homebrew low power variac:
Feed a variable low voltage ac source, such as a model train transformer into the low voltage secondary winding of a 120v-to-12v/24/36v transformer, where the high voltage primary winding
feeds your power line/mains device (of course, Eur: 230v xfmr. primary)
This will allow you to correspondingly vary the 120v/230v input to your power-line/mains-powered device by means of the model train control. There is the limitation that maximum amperage/wattage (VA for purists ;0) depends upon the ratings of both the model train, and the ac step-down xfmrs, but this idea should be useful for regulating and allowing soft start-up for low-power gear.
