Barrie,

You can buy several grades of phenolic solid rod in various diameters from 
McMaster.  It is usually reddish brown in color.  The 1/4" diameter rod that 
I buy from time to time is quite stiff.  Tolerance on the diameter is 
fairly tight and I have never had any problem with it fitting knobs and bushings 
properly.  I believe that the trade name McMaster uses for what I've been 
buying is Garolite, or something close to that.
