Hello Jay & Group,
You are correct on all accounts.  The WELLER WTCP Series are far more ruggedized, especially since they replaced the old style Temperature Control that was in the handle and that you could hear switching on and off.  The new one is identified as EC-53 I believe.
This Series has more tip types to enhance your successful soldering and re-work  experience and results in more joy than frustration.  Plus it has 600, 700, & 800 Degree F. Tips.  The regulation is very good providing you'e iron is not in a breeze, draft, for soldering uner water.  :<(.

When COOPER TOOLS bought WELLER and UNGAR, they degraded the competetive
excellence.  Weller produced a low-cost Temp Controlled Station that failed the endurance of time miserably.
