Folks,
I have had bad luck with several Weller digitaly controlled irons over
the years in my carreer. The cost of a new controller board and the
labor cost to then do the repair was about the cost of a new unit.
However, I have had great success with the Weller irons that have the
temp controlled tips. The ones with a number stamped into the tip back
end designating the temp. When I left my last employer in 2006 my Weller
that I purchased in 1983 was still on my bench and working fine even
had some of the original tips.
I have the same model here at home now for about 12 years and never
had a problem. The biggest secret to tip longevity is clean the tip
before turning the iron off!
At my present place of employ there is a wide variety of irons in use
depending on the process requirement and the personal preference of the
user.I "inherited" Metcal irons which do OK for surface mount
components but lack the control one sometimes would like. As we are
budget limited in this small company I must make do.

Subject: [Boatanchors] new soldering station
I am ordering a new soldering station and need some help. First, my
Weller quit after just 5 years and no more than 10 times used each
year. Circuit board is bad and the iron. I am not a happy camper.
Repairs would cost the same as buying a new Hakko.
I want to make sure when I order the Hakko 936 that I get the correct
size, S-M-L iron. I want to use the like-new tips I bought for the
Weller WES51. I was told that they use the same tips.
Also, if anyone has a use for the Weller station for parts let me
know. The 24V xfmr is fine, the heavy duty iron stand and the iron
cord as well as the temp pot, etc. All I want is the shipping cost
and whatever the rest is worth to you.
