John,
Until you find an audio matching transformer if you have a 6.3 volt filament transformer you will find it will probably work pretty well. A 120V to 6.3V has around a 20 to 1 turns ratio and the impedance transformation ratio is the square of the turns ratio giving you a 400 to 1 impedance transformation ratio. So an 8 ohm speaker on the 6.3 volt winding will appear as around 3200 ohms on the input side which is close enough for government work. I have done this several times in the past with good success.
My daughter Anna (she will be 6 in October)is also getting a good immersion into vintage gear. We are currently building a Heathkit digital thermometer I found still sealed in its original box at a hamfest earlier this year. There is good hope for the future :)

Greetings all,
I rescued a pretty ugly BC-324N and have it running now. Lucky most of the ugly was just dirt and the front panel cleaned up quite well! but the case will need a repainting. If I recall correctly, the speaker output is 4KOhm and was wondering if any one had a transformer hanging around so I could use 4-8 ohm speakers with it. I could offer cash or even better, tested vacuum tubes in exchange. Would be willing to offer 2-3 times worth of tubes in exchange but cash OK as well. Also, if I am wrong with the output impeadance please let me know.
I had my 6 year old Son listening to it on a pair of headphones and we found a Chineese broadcast and he got all excited and listened to it while he ate breakfast before school! Looks like there is hope for #2 son and radio! He was so excited It prevented me from harm by the wife for leaving it on the kitchen table the night(well morning) before when I crawled up to bed.
