I never read one of those books but I put a lot of surplus on the air in the 
50's and early 60's following CQ and QST articles. Pulling plates to 
bandspread an ARC-5 receiver or modifying a transmitter for good CW and no 
TVI, or later as a VFO for SSB was all part of the times.

The thought of a small noisy few going anal over it 50-60 years later was 
unheard of.

I better not show pix of my FET modified BC-312N that is regularly used 
these days with a pretty stock ATC; they might turn purple and have a 
coronary.
