[Boatanchors] Transformer Shield Question

I tested a power transformer that came out of a junker Globe Chief 90A last
night.
As I stripped the end off one of the wires that was cut short, all the
insulation pulled off and I was left with wire bare wire all the way into
the bell housing. I removed the bell housing and fortunately found that the
bare wire was still firmly attached to the transformer, and that it's exit
point was easily accessible. So, I put some heat-shrink on the wire and
reattached the bell housing.
The interesting thing is that the wire in question doesn't connect to
anything, and it's not shorted to the housing etc. The only thing I can
think of is that internally, within the transformer itself, there a
break. Voltage testing on the transformer (no load) is good:
1200VCT, 6.3, and 5.0. That made sense as the 5U4 takes 5V, and the
other tubes take 6.3.
I checked the 90A schematics and there are no CT connections for the 6.3 and
5.0, only one for the 1200V (and that CT tested FB OM). So, I may have
lucked out in that the CT is busted for either the 6.3 or 5.0, but that's
not a big deal at all.
I've heard that some transformers contain a shield ("drain shield") that is
between some of the windings, but not connected to the transformer case.
This shield is then grounded external to the transformer. I have no
manual for the 90A, and the bama manual is just the schematics (which
doesn't help in this situation).
Comments?
