[Boatanchors] Reasonable Price

Brother do I agree on this one... There was a
member of this list that offered a bunch of power
tubes to the list with a make me an offer as well
as a Halli receiver on make me an offer and then
it shows up that he really wants far more then
retail on the tubes and after offers being made on
the Halli finds out that it may really be
collectable and comes back with I am going after
the BIG BUCKS... This is no longer hobby time
folks... Another guy on here put an ad out for a
51J3 and speaker that was really a GREAT price...
I jumped and bought it even though I am sure
others probably offered him more. I got the best
51J that I have ever had from that deal and it is
not going anyplace...

Absolutely, Carl. Place a price on it, if folks
don't like it they can
make an offer or get on with life. Too often the
'make an offer' folks
seem to be trolling for the highest price they can
get while avoiding
ebay fees. Right up there with 'accepting trades,
what are you
offering?' which gives you no idea what they're
interested in. I avoid
these types like the plague. Their own words act
as a 'lid filter' of
sorts.

Back in the late 90s some idiot around Nashua NH
posted a 51J-4
(really was the R-388) receiver for sale on
QTH.com for what seemed
like a fair price, $250 needing a replacement
escutcheon, main tuning
knob, and a few other minor things. I agreed to
buy it, then heard
nothing from him for days. When I finally got him
to respond, he
remarked that 'a bidding war has broken out' and
how much above $500
was I willing to pay? Asked him how a bidding war
could break out if
he had already agreed to sell it to me for a set
price? Apparently he
was still pretending it was a J-4. Funny thing
was, I saw him trying
to sell the same receiver at Hosstraders in
Rochester, NH later that
year - complete with broken escutcheon for $375,
to no avail. Even
more amusing, I ended up with it in a later trade
from his friend he
eventually sold it to, for far less than the
original price.

I've dealt with you Robert on a number of
occasions either to purchase
or trade, and always been happy with the items,
prices, and prompt
shipping. In fact, certain items that show up as
'really cheap',
particularly from unknown sellers, always put me
on guard. Especially
with the number of items you offer, the
cheapskates must get to be
overbearing some days. After a while, you know who
the good folks are
and who to ignore.
