Lee,
You are correct that you "peak for max" on the HT-40. It does not
monitor plate current which is unfortunate. The only metering is for
grid drive and relative output.
This omission is true of much of the later Halli gear, my HT-44 and
SR-150 are also "tune for max" with plate current metering available
only by hooking up an external meter to the external power supply. I
guess they were preparing early for the dumbing down of ham radio and
thus "simplified" the tuning procedure.
