Lee,
The HT-40 was available as a "Halli Kit" or assembled.
It has a basic Pi net output and as such the harmonics will be no worse
than any other typical class C final, in general they shouldn't be a
problem for you but you could always add a low pass filter or use an
antenna tuner configuration that provides additional harmonic filtering.
I have the HT-40/SX-140 setup and it is a fine little vintage station.
On AM, it is screen modulated like many of the little transmitters and
may need some help from an external linear amp if you spend a lot of
time on 75 AM. Mine tunes smoothly and although the SX-140 receiver
leaves a bit to be desired I have used it to make a number of contacts.
I use a Knight VFO with mine since I have a couple and it is easy to
move it to various transmitters since it has its own power supply built
in. Hallicrafters did make a hetrodyne type VFO (HA-5) which you could
use with this but for typical pricing of these you could buy several
HT-40/SX-140 stations. So I would use any of the classic VFO's which
will drive the HT-40 fine, the HT-40 won't supply power to the VFO so
you should choose one with a built in power source.
