You are absolutely correct.  Up until two years ago when a "free to
good home" somewhat crippled HT-32 followed me home (which I have yet
to mate though I'm hoping for something Collins-ish), I ran nothing
but surplus or homebrew.  Both drew comment but it was the HB
transmitters that got the greater attention and gave me the greater
feeling of accomplishment.  I only built TRF & regen receivers but
never used them with a transmitter though I think I was missing
something in not doing so.  (These are the ones I built on 1x12 pine
cut from construction site scrap prior to getting my ticket.)
