Michael,

I would highly encourage you to go through with your homebrew thoughts.  
There is nothing quite like a QSO with gear you built yourself.  I just 
finished wiring up a seven tube xmtr last week and can't wait to get on the air 
(though mine is late 50's early 60's design, a bit newer than you're 
contemplating).

I've got a supply of older variable caps, coils, knobs, etc. that would be 
period correct for your 30's/40's transmitter.  If you decide to go ahead 
with your project, let me know of your needs.
