I used orange Go-Joe hand cleaner and it worked well.

Pumice free automotive hand cleaner.
 
I have use this for decades ( at least two !) with no negative results.
 
for knobs :  put a gob in your hand then grb the knobs and roll around until
coated. Wait a while to let the cleaner work ( ten minutes or so) then rinse
in water and dry.  Make sure set screw  and shaft get dry!  
 
for a panel : Apply it on, rub , wait.  Wipe it off with a damp sponge.
Repeat until removed . Dry with shop towel.
