I have two suggestions you might try before cutting up the knob. The set
screw has probably slipped at some time in the past and raised a burr on the
shaft, which cut a grove in the ID of the knob. If the switch has a
positive mechanical stop at the lowest band, you can try twisting the knob as you
pull on it and see whether you can get the burr to cut into the bore and
follow a helical path out. If that doesn't work, you could try drilling a hole
through the exact center of the knob down to the flat end of the shaft.
Then use a gear puller whose drive screw (or an extension) will fit into the
hole. If that gets the knob off in one piece, you can plug the hole somehow
and use the knob.
