[Boatanchors] Removing knob with steel set screw

I have a Johnson Viking 122 VFO. The band change knob will turn freely on the
shaft if I loosen the set screw, but it won't pull off the shaft.

The VFO is mounted in an ugly chassis/PSU that I would like to free it from.

I can't see enough of the shaft to grab hold of it, so any pulling force will be
applied to the switch, probably with disastrous effects.

Is there anything I can do other than cut the knob off the shaft?
