[Boatanchors] FW: Power capabilities of SGC-230 and other SGC tuners

I received the following reply to my request to SGC
regarding AM capabilities of the SGC-230 and other
SGC tuners. My request for info from SGC follows
their reply.

I must admit that SGC's reply confuses me. One COULD
assume that 80W carrier on AM would be okay, but I am
not at all sure I would risk it at the 80W level.

Perhaps their position is that the modulation is of a
transient nature and the tuner would "HANDLE" that.
I really don't know!

I do believe, though, that the SGC-230 would probably
be okay at the power OUTPUT levels of Gonset G-77/A,
Morrow MB-560/565, Johnson Ranger, Elmac AF-67/68,
and others that run a maximum of 65W INPUT on AM phone.

There is no way I'd risk one of my own SG-230s on a
Viking I/II, B&W 5100, Collins 32S-*, DX-100, etc.

Dear "Mac",

Thank you for your interest in our automatic antenna couplers. We
suggest you go to our web site (www.sgcworld.com) and under Brochures
we have a comparison chart for our different models. You will see the
power ratings and it will mention CW power. Example: SG-230 is rated
200 watts SSB/PEP but only 80 watts CW - this refers to continuous duty
i.e. data or AM or similar mode. The power ratings do vary from one
model to another.

Best regards,

Can you please provide info as to the power handling
capabilities of various SGC tuners with an applied 100%
modulated AM signal? Many hams on the "Boatanchors"
mailing list are discussing this and I figured the best
source for accurate information would be the manufacturer.

By the way, I own TWO SGC-230 tuners.
