I'd say no standard has changed; they are just dropping what is less
popular.  Some hardware stores still carry the less popular stuff in
little drawers.  Or where I live there are a couple of bolt and screw
supply companies fairly nearby that carry a lot of stuff.  But lots
of people order from McMaster-Carr supply company.
