The Icoms have nice audio so you will get good reports on frequency. Its 
what happens around you that is the problem.

When the band is open the feeding frenzy and splatter often buries the 
noise when on SSB. However the phase noise can drive the weak signal CW 
guys nuts.

I had a 551D in the 80's that replaced a TR-6 and then went the 
transverter route and was thanked by many! Still have a 451A (same 
family) that I use as backup on 432 and as a driver for some microwave 
gear where it doesnt bother anyone.
