[Boatanchors] Ranger Caps and Solid State Rectifiers

Hi Larry,
You'll find that the mica's are INDEED failing. I find at least one
or two in every radio that I do. (several a week) It's the same thing that
gets everything else. Moisture. If the seal around the leads fail, the cap
fails. We've been seeing this in Hammarlund radios for many many years.
The caps that fail in the bottom of the IF cans are mica, and when they
fail, the circuit won't peak. Just got done rebuilding an RCA 10K
shortwave/AM receiver and EVERY mica was BAD! In some cases the leads fell
out of the caps when I touched them.

Larry,
This is NOT TRUE. Micas are failing. I've had several bad ones in
R-388/75A's. I'm not the only one that's found this problem. I'm not
talking about "micamolds" or "postage stamps". Maybe Rangers are lucky? Or
don't have any?

Al, W8UT
