Thanks to my friend Rodger WQ9E for pointing out that the Galaxy R-530 
(Hygain R-1530) uses a PLL synthesizer, albeit a simple one, similar to 
that used in the National HRO-500.  Which I should have realized, and 
apologize for any confusion.    My only excuse is that Fred Ostermans 
book has it wrong ;-)
