[Boatanchors] Intelligibility on SSB

Hi Harold & Gang,

As I see it, a rather big problem exists because of the trend in design
cutting off the lows, at 300 cycles & down, the later Collins rigs went
down from a 3.1 bandpass to a 2.1 I believe cutting off at 400 cycles.
I have a deep voice. If you cut off everything below 400 cycles, you
are not hearing my natural voice, you're hearing the harmonic content.
When the Collins KWM2 came out a good friend of mine, W5DLA
in Gulfport Miss, bought one with the recommended microphone.
Well, I had been talking to many hams on 75 meters for years almost
all using phasing rigs. I visited W5DLA while passing thru his town
and he was talking to the usual crowd that hung out on 3925 Kcs.
When I spoke to them, none, and I mean NONE, knew who I was!
When I told them they were skeptical. My home rig was a Central
Electronics 10B driving a homebrew modified 1625 gg driving 4
modified 1625's gg using a D-104 microphone.

Another ham on the Missippi Gulf Coast used to remark out of a
clear blue sky while in a roundtable, "Ken you sound like BBC!"
No mistaking who I was! No, I have never worked in the Commercial
Broadcast Service!
FWIW,

Ken N5CM
