I often wondered about this as my NC-173, and others I'm aware of, lost 
their bottom cover plate over the years.  Having the plate in places does 
impact the alignment.  Other recievers of other manufacturers can exhibit 
the same issue with alignment shifting with the bottom plate present and/or 
when placed in their cabinets.

I have a couple rectangular pieces of cardboard covered with aluminum foil. 
This makes it easy to simulate the impact of the bottom plate or cabinet 
capacity by holding the cardboard up to the bottom chassis.  Faster 
alignment.
