Mahlon,

What you might try, if you have a Power Coating firm close by.
Get your knobs cleaned up, mount them on some metal shafts so
can make electrical contact, at take to them.  When they get a 
job in that is red they could spray your knobs.  They have enough
overspray on project, shouldn't cost that much to hit your knobs.

Just a though.  We have a power coating firm a few miles away and
they do old metal toys regularly when doing big jobs.
