Not to mention the iron cores/laminations. I always make it a point to
bake old/unused transformers for a while to rid them of moisture
absorbed over time.

The dishwasher approach has never appealed to me, perhaps because I've
never wanted anything so clean as to risk ruining it in the process.
Unless it's only intended to be a display piece of other 'trophy'
representation, cosmetics come in second to functionality.
