The chemical / electrical reactions are different.  However, the results are similar.  When I was the Senior Engineering Administrator in the Process Division at Collins Radio here in Richardson, Texas (1967 - 1969), the purple plague was a major problem in the thin films that were being manufactured for use at Sandia Base out in New Mexico (nuclear purposes).
