Glen brought up some good points but some times the "good old American 
brands" like Black & Decker" are not that good either.
A case in point is that my wife received a B & D toaster over and after 
using it one time, a plastic shaft that controlled the temperature broke in 
three pieces.
When I contacted the authorized service center they told me that the part 
was not available. I asked them what I was supposed to do with the unit and 
they told me to go out and buy another one!
